Grappling shorts are sports shorts built for no-gi grappling and MMA. They sit close to the body, hold at the waist with an elastic band and a drawstring, and use fabric and seams that survive being gripped and stretched round after round. The difference with a regular pair of training shorts shows up fast. Ordinary shorts have deep pockets that catch fingers and toes, seams that split under a leg lock, and a waistband that ends up around your knees after a scramble. Grappling shorts drop the pockets, move the seams away from the inner thigh, and add stretch panels where the leg opens. Length is a matter of preference. A cut that stops above the knee moves more freely and suits an open guard game. A longer cut protects the skin on a stiff mat and stays put when you play from your back. Try both before deciding you have a preference. Sizing is not your usual clothing size. Grappling shorts are cut close, and a size that feels right standing still will feel tight in a takedown. Use the size chart on the product page, measure your waist, and if you are between two sizes take the larger one: a short you cannot squat in is a short you will not wear. If you compete, check the uniform rules of your federation before ordering. Colour, closure and pocket requirements differ from one organisation to another, and gear that is fine in training can be refused at the check-in table. Care is simple and it is what makes a pair last. Wash cold, inside out, with the drawstring tied so it does not disappear into the waistband. Air dry. A tumble dryer kills the elastane in the stretch panels long before the fabric itself wears out.
