Our BJJ gi guides

Choosing a Brazilian jiu-jitsu gi means answering four questions in order: which size, which fabric density, which constraints if you compete, and how to make it last. Our BJJ gi guides deal with each of these questions separately, with the figures and the sources. They are written by a brand that makes gis, not by an affiliate site.

Where to start: if you are buying your first gi, read the size guide then the fabric weight guide. If you are preparing for a competition, go straight to the IBJJF rules, then come back to fabric weight for the question of weight on the scale.

Moving on to the gear

Once the theory is settled, our gis are sorted by fabric weight and by approval. Models allowed in competition carry the IBJJF label on their product page, and every product page shows the weight of the gi size by size, the figure competitors look for before a weigh-in.

A question that is not covered here?

These guides grow month after month. Other subjects are in preparation: the beginner’s first gi, women’s cuts, managing weight for competition, choosing a rash guard and the service life of a gi. Shorter articles and brand news are on the ATHOM blog.
