BJJ gear bags, for the gi and everything with it

A gi coming out of an hour of sparring does not travel like running kit. That one detail decides the shape of the bag.

What a BJJ bag has to swallow

The list barely changes from one training partner to the next: a gi, a belt, a rashguard, nogi shorts, a mouthguard, a bottle, and usually a pair of flip flops so you are not crossing the changing room barefoot. A folded gi already takes the space of a heavy jumper, and it goes up a size once it is soaked.

That is why a general purpose gym bag runs out of room fast. It is sized for shorts and a t-shirt, not for two kilos of wet cotton. The right volume starts where the gym bag stops.

Damp kit is the real problem

The gi comes off wet, it goes to the bottom of the bag, and the bag spends the night in the boot of the car. Two weeks of that and the smell stays, in the bag and in whatever travelled next to it.

Two habits are enough. Take the gi out when you get home, even if the shower comes first, and hang it straight away. And pick a bag whose lining actually cleans up, tight woven rather than technical fabric that holds onto everything. The rest is discipline, not equipment.

Our gi fabric tote

The ATHOM tote is cut from the same 450 GSM pearl weave as our gis. It is the simple format: one gi, a belt, a bottle, and a 30 °C wash like the rest of your kit.

It is not a competition bag and does not pretend to be. For a session down the road it does the job, and it ages the way a gi ages, which is to say well.

Backpack or duffle

The choice comes down to the journey, not the capacity. On a bike, on the train, walking to the gym, the backpack wins: hands free and the weight sits on both shoulders. In a car, or when you need two gis for a competition day, the duffle is easier to load and opens wider.

Convertible models, the ones with stowaway shoulder straps, exist because plenty of people switch between both in the same week.

How many gis

A rough guide: around 30 litres for one gi and a training session, around 50 litres for two gis and a competition day. Below 25 litres you are looking at a second bag, fine for nogi, tight as soon as a gi is involved.

The rest of the kit

The bag does not fill itself. BJJ gis, belts and rashguards each have their own section, and the other accessories fill the gaps. Buying for somebody else, a gift card lets them pick the model.
