The Chiller is a pair of straight-cut black ripstop trousers made to wear every day. Street clothing, light and hard-wearing, pulled in at the waist with a cord and needing no adjusting.<\/p>\n

What ripstop actually does<\/h2>\n

Ripstop is a light cloth crossed by a grid of thicker threads, visible up close as a fine check. That grid has one job: when the fabric catches, the tear stops at the first reinforced thread instead of running the length of the leg.<\/p>\n

It comes from technical and military clothing and was adopted by streetwear for two reasons that have nothing to do with strength: it is light, and it dries fast. Ripstop folds into a travel bag without taking up room and does not come out creased the way a heavy canvas would.<\/p>\n

The cut<\/h2>\n

Straight, tapering slightly towards the ankle, worn loose. The hem turns up once or twice without bulking out, which changes the whole look of the trousers depending on the day.<\/p>\n

The waist is elasticated with a flat drawstring. No belt to remember, no button to fight after a post-competition meal. A trivial detail until you spend a full day travelling in them.<\/p>\n

The pockets<\/h2>\n

Two side pockets, deep enough that a phone stays put when you sit down, and one welt pocket at the back closed by a plain opening and marked with a small woven tab. Nothing else: patch pockets and snap flaps add bulk and catch on everything.<\/p>\n

Street clothing, not sportswear<\/h2>\n

Worth saying plainly, because ripstop comes from technical clothing and the confusion is easy to make. The Chiller is not built for training. It is an everyday trouser, worn to work, around town, travelling, from morning to evening.<\/p>\n

What it borrows from technical clothing is the light weight and the tear resistance. What it keeps from street clothing is a straight, plain cut, with no visible logo, no flap pockets and no contrast topstitching. You can wear it to a meeting without looking like you came from a sports hall.<\/p>\n

Care<\/h2>\n

Cold wash, air dry. A tumble dryer adds nothing to a fabric that already dries quickly, and it tires out the waist elastic. Black keeps its depth if you avoid hot washes and whitening detergents.<\/p>\n

Pull the cord out of the channel before washing if you would rather not find it twisted inside. It takes five seconds and saves ten minutes of irritation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
