550 GSM, and who it suits<\/h2>\n

Most competition gis sit between 350 and 450 GSM. At 550 you are in another category: the cloth resists pulling, barely bunches in your partner’s hand, and takes years to open at the armpits.<\/p>\n

That comes at a price. A 550 dries slowly, weighs on your bag and runs hot in summer. If you train three times a week in a gym without air conditioning, a 450 will be more comfortable day to day. If you want a weave that lasts and grips that are hard to break, this is the one.<\/p>\n

One detail not to overlook: at the weigh-in, the gi counts towards your weight. Check your margin before showing up in a 550.<\/p>\n

The embroidery<\/h2>\n

Two characters on the jacket skirt: \u67d4\u8853, read j\u016bjutsu, the origin of our jiu-jitsu. On the pants, in katakana: \u30de\u30c3\u30c8\u4e0a\u306e\u9078\u624b\u305f\u3061, literally “the athletes on the mat”, the Japanese rendering of Athletes on the Mat.<\/p>\n

The knee reinforcements are visible on the pants, stitched across the whole ground contact area.<\/p>\n

Royal blue in competition<\/h2>\n

IBJJF rules allow three gi colours: white, royal blue and black. The Shohei is plain royal blue, jacket and pants matching, which rules out the most common reason a gi gets turned away at the uniform check.<\/p>\n

Size and care<\/h2>\n

The size finder further down works from your height and your weight. Wash at 30 \u00b0C inside out, air dry, never in a tumble dryer: on a 550 weave, heat shrinkage cannot be undone.<\/p>\n

The long cuts, A1L and A2L<\/h3>

They keep a width close to the standard size and lengthen the jacket, the sleeves and the pants. They are made for lean builds, at a comparable weight.<\/p>

For example: at 178 cm and 72 kg, the A1L<\/b> gives 2 cm more jacket and 2.5 cm more pant length than an A1, without widening the chest.<\/p><\/div>

Between two sizes<\/h3>

Take the smaller one if you are stocky, the larger one if you are lean. If your weight exceeds the range for your height, go for the larger size: room across the shoulders matters more than length.<\/p>
