Varsity lettering<\/h2>\n

This style of lettering has a name and a precise origin. It is called varsity, after the word for a university’s first team. The characters are heavy, with short serifs, and the word arches above the chest to follow the line of the shoulders. It is the lettering of college sports jackets, cut in felt and stitched on since the 1930s.<\/p>\n

What it announces is not a brand, it is a membership. On a campus jacket, the arched word is the name of the school, and the patches on the sleeves name the sport and the year. The grammar is the grammar of a team.<\/p>\n

A team in an individual sport<\/h2>\n

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is practised alone against an opponent, but nobody improves alone. You belong to an academy, you wear its patch on your gi, you travel to competitions with the same faces, and you owe your progress to specific training partners.<\/p>\n

The Team model borrows the codes of team sport for a sport that is not one. That is what the arch across the chest and the two sleeve patches are saying: a team jersey for a discipline where the team exists without ever stepping onto the mat with you.<\/p>\n

The black one, in practice<\/h2>\n

On black, the letters are coral with a white outline. The principle is the same as on the light version, reversed. Saturated coral laid straight onto black would vibrate: the edges would appear to shimmer, an effect printers know well when two strongly contrasting colours meet. The white line slots in between, absorbs that tension and holds the letter still.<\/p>\n

Two colours plus an outline give the black a different reading from the white. Where the light version quotes the campus tee, this one reads as an away kit: same letters, same codes, a palette that steps outside the frame.<\/p>\n

In wear, this is the layering version. Under an open jacket or an unzipped hoodie, the arch stays visible where a standard chest logo would disappear under the lapel. Coral on black also survives the flat white lighting of most gyms, which flattens almost every other colour.<\/p>\n

A word on care specific to this design: a two-layer print, a solid colour plus an outline, suffers more from an iron than a flat one. Contact heat softens the upper layer before the lower one, and the outline shifts. Iron inside out, or not at all.<\/p>\n

The cut<\/h2>\n

Shoulder seams on the shoulder, sleeve to mid-bicep, straight drop from chest to hip. Nothing fitted, nothing floating. An arched print assumes the shirt hangs straight: worn too tight, the word distorts across the chest.<\/p>\n
