You do not start from S, M or L, but from two measurements: your height in centimetres and your weight. It is the combination of the two that determines the right cut. A tall, slim practitioner and a short, stocky one can weigh the same without wearing the same size. Enter your measurements in the selector at the top of the page: it cross-references both and gives you the size that fits.

Sizes A0 to A4

Adult gis follow the A0 to A4 numbering, from smallest to largest. A0 suits lighter builds around 1.55 m (5’1″), A4 suits practitioners over 1.95 m (6’5″). In between, each size covers a height and weight range that you will find in the measurements table above. The L variants, such as A1L or A2L, offer the same width as a standard size, with a longer jacket and longer sleeves, designed for lean builds.

Between two sizes, which one should you take?

If your measurements fall between two sizes, the rule is simple: take the smaller size if you are stocky, the larger one if you are lean. A gi that is too big hangs loose and is easy to grip in a fight. A gi that is too short may fail the size check in competition. When in doubt, adjust on sleeve and jacket length rather than on weight.

Shrinkage in the wash

Our gis are pre-shrunk. The fabric has already gone through most of its shrinkage during manufacturing, so it will not get noticeably shorter with use. Wash it at 30 °C (86 °F) and let it air dry. Avoid the tumble dryer, the number one cause of a gi turning out too short. So choose your size on your current measurements, without allowing any margin for shrinkage.

Women’s cuts, F1 to F4

Women’s models follow their own numbering, from F1 to F4. The cut is tailored to the female build, more fitted at the waist and adjusted at the shoulders. Switch the selector to Women to get a recommendation on the right chart, and refer to the women’s size table.

Competition gis and IBJJF approval

In IBJJF competition, referees check sleeve length, jacket length and collar width before every match. Choosing the wrong size can get you turned away at the check. If you compete, make sure the jacket and sleeves meet the official measurements for your build, and go for a size that passes the check with your arms extended.

Still unsure about your size?

The selector and the table cover the vast majority of cases.
